Aurora Acquiring Lidar Company - Pioneering Minds
Self-driving startup Aurora is acquiring Our Technology, a Santa Clara, California-based lidar company that creates sensors needed for self-driving vehicles and another autonomous tech. Lidar, which many people would recognize as the spinning contraption sitting on top of a self-driving car as it whirls around the Strip District, helps the autonomous vehicle “see” its surroundings. Using sensors and sensor data, Ours Technology says it enables “5D vision” that will speed up the development of autonomous tech. For Aurora, which has headquarters in Lawrenceville, the lidar that Ours Technology provides will make it easier to deploy the sensors quickly and broadly. Ours offers “ lidar on a chip” technology, Aurora said in its news release announcing the acquisition Friday. In other words, its lidar is extremely small and scalable. The acquisition will complement an earlier deal with Bozeman, Montana-based Blackmore, which provided long-range sensing that helped Aurora deploy its autonomous trucks.
